EMS Education/Training

Are you interested in a rewarding career in EMS? Do you want to learn more about this exciting field? Do you want to advance your career to the next level?

At Health-Tech Ambulance Service we believe our team members are our most valuable asset. We have compiled some valuable information to help you explore the requirements for becoming a certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in the state of Massachusetts.

There are three levels or Emergency Medical Technicians in Massachusetts: Basic, Intermediate and Paramedic. Only OEMS-accredited EMT training institutions can provide initial EMT training that leads to Massachusetts certification as an EMT.

Basic Training
The Basic training program for Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) has an overall objective to improve the quality of pre-hospital emergency care rendered to victims of accidents and sudden illness. As such, the course develops skills in symptom recognition and in all emergency care procedures and techniques currently considered to be within the responsibilities of an EMT providing emergency medical care with an ambulance service. No prior experience or training is required of the course applicant. The applicant, in order to be eligible for the state EMT certification examination must:

spacer Be able to read, understand and communicate in English;
spacer Be a minimum of 18 years of age;
spacer Be free from addiction to alcohol;
spacer Be able to lift and carry 125 pounds; and
spacer Be free from physical or mental defect or disease which might impair his/her ability to provide emergency care within the scope of the EMT training and responsibilities, or which might jeopardize the health of another member of the class.

Upon completion of the basic EMT course, the student must pass the EMT-B certification examination process.

Intermediate Training
The Emergency Medical Technician – Intermediate (EMT-I) has as its base the basic EMT program and then has certain proven clinical skills and knowledge to support the skills added to the basic program. An EMT-I is a person who has successfully completed both a basic EMT and an EMT-Intermediate training program and has successfully completed the Massachusetts EMT-I certification examination process.

Advanced (Paramedic) Training
The Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic (EMT-P) provides pre-hospital emergency care to acutely ill or injured patients primarily by ambulance service and mobile advanced life support (ALS) units under medical command authority, and secondarily in other appropriate settings under a physician’s control. An EMT-P is a person who has successfully completed both an OEMS approved EMT-Basic and EMT-Paramedic training program and has completed requirements for State certification.
